O imóvel onde funciona a Sala Baden Powell, em Copacabana, será desapropriado pela Prefeitura do Rio. A decisão foi publicada no Diário Oficial dessa quinta-feira (07/03). A medida é necessária para evitar que a cidade perca um equipamento cultural de grande relevância. As negociações para renovação do contrato de locação do imóvel tinham chegado a um impasse, na medida em que os proprietários exigiam um reajuste de mais de 100% do valor do aluguel, e se recusaram a realizar obras estruturais de sua responsabilidade.
A sala ocupa dois andares, mede cerca de 1,5 mil metros quadrados e fica num dos trechos mais movimentados da Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. De janeiro até setembro de 2023, passaram por ali mais de 25 mil espectadores.
Em 2015, o prefeito Eduardo Paes publicou decreto transformando o espaço em patrimônio imaterial do Rio. O imóvel foi inaugurado em 2000, no lugar do antigo cinema Ricamar, fundado em 1958 e que funcionou até 1994. Desde 2012 sob a guarda da Prefeitura, mantém um teatro com 485 lugares; duas salas multiuso e a Sala de Leitura Alfredo Machado, em parceria com a Editora Record.
